HENRY KING

Henry King landed and signed the Peterson Field Register twice. His first visit was on Friday, September 28, 1934 at 1:00PM. He carried two unidentified passengers in a Waco he identified as NC13424. King and his passengers were based at Los Angeles, CA and were eastbound for New York, NY.

His second landing at Colorado Springs was on Sunday, August 30, 1936. This time he was solo, arriving from Wichita, KS on his way to Los Angeles. His airplane was an unidentified Waco.

Henry King was a movie director from 1930 to 1961. Before that he acted in repertory theaters and began taking film roles in the early 1900s. Flying & Popular Aviation (PA) magazine, June 1941 featured King in an informative article titled, "Flying Director." It described King's use of his airplanes to research settings for his films. He owned a string of airplanes, settling on Waco Cabins as his preferred mount. The article is downloadable at the link (PDF 1.3Mb). The photo, above, right, is from that article.

During World War II, King served as the deputy commander of the Civil Air Patrol coastal patrol base in Brownsville, TX, holding the grade of captain. In his final years, he was the oldest licensed private pilot in the United States.

King was born January 24, 1886 in Virginia and passed away June 29, 1982 in California. He has a good Web presence, including filmographies and biographical sketches King also signed the Clover Field Register once.
