J. PARKER VAN ZANDT
Parker Van Zandt landed once at Peterson Field on Thursday, July 3, 1930 at 12:45PM. He carried four unidentified passengers in the Fairchild NC8038. Their itinerary was cited as Santa Fe, NM to Chicago, IL. No purpose was stated for their journey. I have no good photographs of Van Zandt. If you can help, please let me KNOW.
He began flying as an officer with the Signal Corps in World War I and remained an Army pilot until 1926. He was the founder of Scenic Airways, which operated out of Phoenix, AZ with tours of the Grand Canyon. He bought three farms on the outskirts of Phoenix and built a landing strip, a hangar and an office for his new Airways. He called it Sky Harbor. The city of Phoenix kept the name when it bought the airport from Van Zandt in 1935.
In October 1929 when the Great Depression set in, the company and assets sold to some local Arizona pilots. The company changed its name to Grand Canyon Airlines, and it still operates today as the Grand Canyon Airlines from the south rim of the Canyon.
In addition to his single landing at Colorado Springs, Van Zandt landed ten times at the Davis-Monthan Airfield during the four months between November 5, 1927 and March 6, 1928. He used the Stinson NC1517 for these landings. His biography is online at the Davis-Monthan Airfield Web site at the link.
