LOCKHEED MODEL 3 AIR EXPRESS, NC/NR3057

NC/NR3057 was a Model 3 Air Express monoplane. It had a parasol airfoil and a single, open cockpit behind the wing. This airplane was S/N 75, with a manufacture date of May 13, 1929. It was painted black with silver trim. It was the first Lockheed aircraft to have wheel pants installed. It was used originally by the Lockheed Aircraft Company as a demonstrator with at least three different engine models. The full technography for the NC3057 is online at the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register Web site at the link.

The airplane landed three times at Peterson Field, wearing both versions of its registration number, flown by two of the foremost Golden Age pilots. It landed on Sunday, December 14, 1930 and on Friday, August 26, 1932 piloted by Roscoe Turner. One day between August 13 and 16,1934 NC3057 was flown to Peterson Field by Clyde Pangborn.

Below, NC/NR3057 stands behind Roscoe Turner and Loretta Young on the ground at Las Vegas, NV. It does not wear the black paint and silver trim, rather it is painted in Gilmore Gasoline livery, featuring the famous lion that traveled with Turner. You can see clearly the open cockpit, wheel pants and parasol wing structure of the airplane.

I do not know the date of the photograph, however. This photograph is shared with us courtesy of cowboy poet and writer Hal Swift, whom you will discover at the link, spent some time in Indianapolis, IN where Turner ran a business at the city airport. He knew Turner personally. Please direct your browser to Hal's link to learn about and enjoy some of the writing he does.

The gentleman on the left is James Cashman, who was a significant figure in the early days of Las Vegas development. The automobile spare tire is printed with "Cashman, J. Garage Las Vegas, Nevada." A more full description of Cashman's role in Las Vegas history, and his auto/truck transportion business, is at his link.

NC/NR3057 also appears in the Registers of the Davis-Monthan Airfield, Tucson, AZ and the Grand Central Air Terminal, Glendale, CA.
