LOCKHEED VEGA NC394H

NC394H was a Lockheed Vega 5, serial number 87. It was manufactured in June, 1929. It left the factory with a Pratt & Whitney Wasp B engine of 450HP (S/N 1615). It sold originally on July 5, 1929 to the Schlee-Brock Aircraft Corporation, a Lockheed distributor based at Detroit, MI.

Schlee-Brock sold the airplane to Dr. Walter M. Cross of Kansas City, MO on July 8, 1929. Cross and his brother headed the Kansas City Testing Company. They were also inventors and developed a method of cracking crude oil into gasoline. But they also were interested in getting into air transport, licensing NC394H to Dr. Walter M. Cross, President, Mid-Continent Air Transport, Inc.

Cross paid $19,450 and the airplane was delivered directly to Kansas City from the factory in Burbank, CA. Interestingly, it was delivered by Register pilot Herbert D. Putnam (landed once at the Davis-Monthan Airfield and twice at Parks Airport).

NC394H landed once at Colorado Springs on Sunday, August 25, 1929 at 1:30PM. It was flown by Kenneth Eugene Gabbert. He carried three unidentified passengers. They arrived from Kansas City, MO enroute to Seattle, WA.

On May 29, 1930 the airplane was sold to Cross Airways, Inc. of Kansas City. This reads like a transfer of assets more than a sale. Regardless, the airplane did not live much longer. It crashed on July 10, 1930 at Aransas Pass, TX. The pilot was Gene Gabbert, who carried five passengers who also lost their lives. Please direct your browser to Gabbert's link for details about Cross, Gabbert, his passengers and their fatal crash.
